Establishing a Low Emission Zone (LEZ)

Air pollution as become an important developmental challenge for many Indian cities. Emissions from various sectors result in high levels of ambient air pollution which leads to adverse health effects. Under the ongoing Indo German Development Corporation, a project on “Reduction of Air Pollution in Three Indian Cities” is being implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH with support of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Natural Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) under the Export Initiative on Environmental Technologies. One of the identified activities under the project is to establish Low Emission Zones (LEZ) in the cities of Pune, Surat and Nagpur. Low Emission Zones (LEZ) are seen as a potential solution to reduce air pollution in selected locations/zone s of the cities by focusing on restricting vehicular movement. For the said project, GIZ has engaged M/s Ernst & Young LLP (E&Y) as consultant for developing technical solution for establishing LEZ's in the said three cities. A stakeholder meeting in this regard was organised to seek inputs on the study conducted and to discuss and finalize the potential site/zone to be developed as LEZ. Similar workshops are also planned in Surat and Nagpur cities.
