Pilot Measures to Implement an EPR System in Egypt

The global project “Support of the Export Initiative Environmental Protection” implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection (BMUV), contributes to solving key environmental problems. The project was implemented in Egypt, in collaboration with the GIZ implemented project supporting the Egyptian National Solid Waste Management Programme.

The project component, extended producer responsibility (EPR) in waste management in Egypt, aims to reduce uncontrolled waste disposal by supporting recycling management and promoting an extended producer responsibility (EPR) system for packaging waste by preparing the framework and building blocks to ensure its successful operational launch.

The BMUV Export Initiative aims to export know-how available in Germany to support sustainable development worldwide. It addresses topics such as poor waste management, air, and water pollution, and supporting infrastructures for sustainable urban development. Partner countries where this project is being implemented are Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Egypt, Jordan, India, and Ukraine. Project measures focus on building up technical and institutional know-how as well as laying the groundwork for the introduction and use of environmental and climate protection technologies “Made in Germany”.

The project contributes to the UN’s sustainable development goals (SDGs) and focuses on knowledge transfer, pilot projects, sustainable business models, capacity building, environmental education, and awareness raising with supported activities embedded in the national strategies of the partner countries.
