In 2021, the world’s economy was only 7.2% circular. Production and consumption patterns still follow the outdated ‘take-make-waste’ practices. As a result, the world has extracted 100 billion tonnes (Gt) of materials in 2021 and is more than 1°C warmer already since the beginning of industrialization. Circular Economy can make a decisive contribution to achieving the Paris climate targets and the Global Methane Pledge. It can reduce not only resource extraction and waste, but pollution, biodiversity loss as well as criticality of raw materials while creating and maintaining jobs and value.

High-level Panel Discussion:

German Environment Agency (UBA) together with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) host a joint discussion of experts from science, politics and intergovernmental organizations in Brussels: “Just and Ambitious: Circular Economy – A concrete answer to transformation demands in a changing world”

UBA and GIZ are focusing on questions where environmental policy and development cooperation complement each other.

We will discuss the following questions:

  • How to ensure that circular and energy transitions in high- and upper-middle income countries do not adversely affect sustainable development in low and lower-middle income countries? How can these effects be monitored and managed?
  • Which barriers need to be removed in order to realize the potentials of a Circular Economy to reduce resource consumption and GHG emissions of high- and upper-middle income economies to globally equitable levels?
  • What are potentials and challenges of low and middle-income countries towards circular economy?
  • What changes are needed to promote circularity in the global energy, industrial, mobility and consumer behaviour transition?
  • Which instruments can support the transition towards a Circular Economy?
